what do I want
to be praised, to be admired when I did good
and to be judged when I wasn’t a good boy
to be loved when I’m beautiful
and to be hated when I’m ugly
or
I want none of those things
and act on my own account
there seems to be a choice here
not of what I feel
but of what I do
I want to relax
but if I relax, there’s no guarantee I’m gonna be appealing, agreeable
I seem to be at the mercy of the Dao
I might be ingenious, I might be aesthetic, I might be enjoyable, but
I can just as well be unattractive, repelling, displeasing to the eye, to the ear
which action evokes which reaction is out of my control
for most of the time, neither do I know if I’m on stage or not, nor the taste of the audience
much of tension, anxiety, or the lack of relaxation comes from the need for me to put on an act
acting, as opposed to behaving the way I want
and maybe the most basic form of acting is rushing
that I do something sooner, faster than is comfortable
than the moment I want to do it
than the pace I want do it in
or even doing anything at all
so what I need to remember is to try and stop that
to stop rushing, to stop being violent on one hand
and not to allow to be rushed, on the other
