What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a simple and very powerful practice of training our mind. It’s simple in that it’s really just about paying attention to what’s happening here and now (i.e. sensations, thoughts, and emotions) in a non-judgmental way. It’s powerful because it can interrupt the habit of getting lost in thoughts, mostly about the future or past, which often generates more stress on top of the real pressures of everyday life.

Mindfulness has been gathering much attention over recent years as a tried-and-tested method of reducing stress, anxiety and depression. By helping us to focus our attention on the present moment and not get swept up in worrying or negative thoughts about the past or future, a regular practice can help us to:

  • learn to cope better with the pressures we're under;
  • recognize the thoughts and judgments we make, often subconsciously, that generate more stress;
  • find balance and a sense of calm.
